Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Pawel Turczyk ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and shares information in connection with the Chess Revision mobile application (the "App").

1. Information we collect

The App is designed to collect as little data as possible.

Account and subscription data. If you purchase a subscription, Apple's App Store processes the transaction and shares with us only the receipt necessary to validate your entitlement. Subscription state is managed by RevenueCat, which assigns the App an anonymous identifier. We do not learn your real name, email address, or payment details from Apple.
How you use the App. We record a small set of counters about your first sessions: how far you got in the walkthrough, how many sessions and scans you have run, how long it took to reach your first scan, how often you opened the subscription screen, and whether reminders are enabled. They are attached to the anonymous subscriber identifier described above and tell us where new users get stuck. They contain no game content and no personally identifying information.
Game content you provide. When you import a game via PGN paste, board photo, or by entering a Lichess or Chess.com username, that content is sent to our analysis backend for engine evaluation. The content is processed in memory and is not retained beyond the duration of the analysis request.
Chess usernames. Typing a Lichess or Chess.com username to look at someone's recent games does not store it. The request is answered and forgotten, exactly like a board photo. We keep a username only if you turn on watching. If you tap Watch on an account and leave "Watch accounts on our server" on in Settings, we store that username so our server can keep checking for new games while the App is closed. Alongside it we store your device's push notification token, so we can tell you, and a marker for the most recent game we have already seen, so you are not told about the same game twice. We do not store the games themselves. Turning "Watch accounts on our server" off in Settings erases all of it from our server, and a device that stops opening the App is erased automatically after 90 days.
Diagnostic data. We collect anonymous performance data (e.g. request timing, error codes) to keep the App running reliably. Diagnostic data does not contain any personally identifying information.
On-device storage. Your imported games, settings, and saved positions are stored locally on your device using the App's database. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly share it.

2. How we use your information

To provide the core analysis and review features of the App.
To notify you about a new game on an account you have asked us to watch.
To validate and manage your subscription entitlement.
To investigate bugs and improve performance.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not track you across other apps or websites.

3. Third parties

Apple. Subscription purchases are processed by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. If you turn on watching, notifications about new games are delivered through the Apple Push Notification service. A notification carries the two players' usernames, which site the game was played on and its identifier, so the App can open it. It does not carry the moves.
RevenueCat. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription entitlements. RevenueCat receives an anonymous subscriber identifier, your Apple subscription receipt, and the usage counters described above. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
Amazon Web Services. Our analysis backend runs on AWS Lambda. Game positions you submit for analysis are processed by AWS in memory and are not persisted by us beyond the request. If you turn on watching, the watched accounts described above are held in an AWS database in the European Union until you turn it off.
Lichess and Chess.com. If you choose to import games by username, the public APIs of Lichess.org and Chess.com are called with that username. The App calls Lichess directly; the Chess.com request is relayed through our backend, which passes it on without keeping it. If you turn on watching, our server makes the same calls on your behalf while the App is closed. Use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.

4. Data retention

We do not store game content on our servers. The one thing we do store is the watched accounts described above, and only while you have watching turned on: the usernames you chose to watch, your device's push notification token and a marker for the most recent game we have seen on each account. Turning "Watch accounts on our server" off in Settings erases them, and a device that has not opened the App for 90 days is erased automatically.

On-device data persists until you delete the App or clear it from within the App. Subscription receipts are retained for as long as required by Apple and applicable accounting law.

5. Your rights

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, to object to processing, and to data portability. In practice we hold very little: an anonymous subscription identifier, and, only if you have turned watching on, the chess usernames you asked us to watch together with your device's push notification token. You can erase the latter yourself at any time by turning "Watch accounts on our server" off in Settings, and the rest by cancelling your subscription and deleting the App. To make a formal request, email us at the address below.

6. Children's privacy

The App is rated for users aged 4 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

7. International data transfers

The App's backend services are hosted in the European Union. If you use the App from outside the EU, your data may be transferred to and processed in the EU, which provides an adequate level of data protection under GDPR.

8. Security

All network traffic between the App and our backend is encrypted in transit using TLS. On-device data is stored within the App's protected container as managed by iOS.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the Effective date above and announced in the App. Your continued use of the App after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
